MARGAO: In an interesting development, the Margao Municipal Council is bracing up to pay the first installment of Rs 1.30 crore to Fomento Green towards the setting up of the waste treatment plant at Sonsodo.
MMC Chief Officer Sandhya Kamat told Herald that the Civic body has completed the formalities to make the payment and the first cheque will be issued to Fomento on Wednesday.

When questioned how the civic body can make the payments without certification of the bills raised by Fomento by a consultant, Kamat reminded that the concession agreement mandated the civic body to make the first payment soon after the signing of the concession agreement. “The question of certification of the bill relating to the first installment does not arise since the payment was to be made at the time of signing of the agreement,” she said.
Meanwhile, MMC Vice-Chairperson Pratima Coutinho called for the proper monitoring of the ongoing waste treatment operations at Sonsodo. Saying that waste is not properly treated at the site, she said that there’s no treatment of the 80 per cent waste on the existing dump.
