MARGAO: Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday underlined the need to carry out medical examination of deaf and dumb children right at the early age of 6-7 months for early diagnosis of speech-related problems.
Speaking at the Ashiyana Day celebrations organized by Fomento Resources at the Ravindra Bhavan here today, Parrikar said, “Deaf and dumb children will be able to speak like normal kids if early diagnosis are carried out at the age of one. Normally, what is done now is children are being testing when they are 5-6 years old. But, by that time, their mental ability is already developed and the hearing problem becomes permanent,” he said.
He said a Pune-based organization is willing to assist the government in detecting problems in children at an early age, adding “these children can speak like normal persons. With minor corrective surgery, they can hear as well.”
The Chief Minister called for spreading awareness in the society to ensure that parents give immediate treatment to children at an early age. He complimented Ashiyana and the teachers for their tremendous contribution to the special children and offered government’s support in their future endeavours.
Earlier, the special children presented an entertainment programme on the occasion. Ministers Ramesh Tawadkar and Mahadev Naik, besides MLAs were present.
