Counterfeit notes: prime accused in Vasco police custody

Vasco police got a major breakthrough in the counterfeit currency case of September 2008, when the West Bengal police arrested the prime accused and handed him over to their counterparts in Vasco.
A police team led by PSI S L Kambli along with two constables had left for West Bengal on April 5, to take into custody the accused Anwar (Bagal) Hussain in connection with the counterfeit currency case reported in the port town on September 6, 2008.
It may be recalled that Vasco police had arrested Mohammad Saiful and Tahir Z Shaikh from West Bengal on September 6, 2008, on charges of possessing 600 counterfeit notes in denominations of Rs 500, amounting to Rs 3 lakh.
This case was cracked with the help of a vigilant pharmacist from Vasco, when the accused, who had arrived in the State to circulate these fake notes in the market, had gone to buy a toothbrush in his shop.
During interrogation, both accused had disclosed that Anwar was the mastermind in the crime.
The three accused reside near the bordering area of Bangladesh, barely five kilometres from the West Bengal border, said police.
According to police, the gangs involved in counterfeit currency in West Bengal exchange original currency of Rs 1 lakh and receive Rs 3 lakh worth of counterfeit notes in return a from gang operating in Bangladesh.
On April 7, Vasco police had arrested another youth from West Bengal on charges of transacting a fake Rs 1000 note at the Tibetan Market, Vasco.
