PANJIM: Efforts are underway on the part of the State government to convert the MPT Hospital into a COVID care centre.
It may be recalled that the hospital had served as a COVID centre during last year’s pandemic. While the hospital has 200 beds and regular staff, it doesn’t have a dedicated ICU or a full-time pulmonologist.

The decision to use the MPT hospital was taken following meetings the Health Department had with the doctors and as a way to ease the burden on the present hospitals and centres, which are full.
Following the government’s meeting with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) where a plea was made to use private practitioners in managing the ever-expanding case load that has exhausted the government doctors, IMA officials were asked to inspect the hospital to see if it can help in managing the facility.
It has also been suggested that certain types of patients be shifted to MPT Hospital when it is operational.
Regarding shifting critical patients to Goa Medical College or South Goa District Hospital, not just from the MPT Hospital but from other COVID Centres, it has been suggested to the government to bring in more ambulances to help this process, which would also help minimise the time taken to complete the transfer of patients.
