A cow that fell into the Salaulim dam canal at Kelkarbag in Sanguem was rescued after being swept nearly 1.5 kilometres from Paik Devasthan towards Kelkarbag, thanks to the timely intervention of the Curchorem Fire Brigade and local residents.
According to locals, the animal was carried along the canal’s strong current before rescue teams managed to safely pull it out, preventing a possible fatality. The incident has once again highlighted serious safety concerns along the canal.

Residents said such incidents continue to occur due to the absence of safety railings along large stretches of the dam canal. At present, railings have been installed only at a few locations, leaving most sections exposed and posing a significant risk to both animals and people.
Locals have urged the Water Resources Department to install safety railings along the entire length of the canal to prevent accidents. They alleged that despite repeated incidents and growing concerns, no comprehensive safety work has been undertaken so far.
The latest incident has renewed demands for immediate preventive measures to ensure public and animal safety in the Sanguem area.
