The case of Nadia Joelle Torrado, who died after consuming rat poison, will now be investigated by the Crime Branch, even as the police maintained there were “suspicious circumstances” leading to the death of the women.
A press note issued here by the Goa Police Public Relations Officer stated, “As far as adding Section 306 of IPC (abetment of suicide) is concerned, it has come to notice during investigations that there are certain suspicious circumstances surrounding the death which point towards abetment of her suicide.”
The PRO said the press release from Goa Police was necessitated due to factually incorrect reports pertaining to the case appearing in the media.
The press note clarified that the second post-mortem was necessitated because the death had taken place within seven years of marriage and as such inquiry proceedings to be carried out by the sub-divisional magistrate, Margao, became mandatory. As a result of this the SDM investigating the case as per provisions of Section 176 of CrPC had ordered the second autopsy on the body of Nadia, it mentioned.
The PRO stated the case was transferred to the Crime Branch with immediate effect for a professional investigation.
