MARGAO: The district authorities on Monday opened the seal put on Plot No 2 of the Cuncolim Industrial Estate to facilitate covering of the 25,000 tons of hazardous waste before the onset of monsoons, with a direction to Ms The Axis to complete the covering before May 15 evening.

A team from the District Collectorate led by Awal Karkun, Rosario Fernandes descended on the industrial estate along with Goa State Pollution Control Board officials to open the plot which was earlier sealed by the administration to stop unauthorized transportation of waste.

Sources in the know said that GSPCB official submitted a detailed program to Ms The Axis how to go about the work, including the nature of tarpaulin to be used to cover the plot.

The decision to cover the dump yard comes in the backdrop of the host of decisions taken by Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar to tackle hazardous waste.

The Chief Minister had last month set a 15-day deadline on Ms The Axis to cover the hazardous waste with tarpaulin sheets as a temporary measure, taking into account the fast approaching monsoons.

Parrikar had also issued directions to the Industrial Development Corporation to hand over a plot of land to Ms The Axis to set up a landfill site on scientific lines in consultation with the Goa State Pollution Control Board.

“Our priority for the moment in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate is to get the hazardous waste covered with tarpaulin sheets to prevent the waste from getting exposed to rains. Once this is done, the next action would be to get the IDC to hand over the landfill site to Ms The Axis for treatment of hazardous waste”, remarked a GSPCB official.
