Artisans cry foul over subsidy
MAYEM: Artisans engaged in making idols of Lord Ganesh in Bicholim have complained that they are yet to receive last year’s subsidy from the Goa State Handicrafts Corporation.

Claiming that they had submitted files well within the stipulated time and after complying with necessary formalities, the aggrieved artisans have requested the State government to release the subsidy within a week to enable them prepare for the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. It may be recalled that the State government had assured the artisans of a subsidy for all types of eco-friendly Ganesh idols.
One booked for kidnapping
SANGUEM: A resident of Barazan-Sanguem has been accused of kidnapping a minor girl from Sanguem. According to Sanguem Police, the girl’s father complained that between 11.45 pm on May 2 and 5.45 am on May 3 the accused kidnapped his daughter and the motive is believed to be a love affair. They have registered the case under Section 365 IPC, Section 8 (2) of Goa Children Act 2005.
2 found selling liquor without licenses
CORTALIM: Two persons from Alto-Bogmalo have been booked for allegedly selling liquor without licences.
According to Mormugao Excise Inspector Seby Pereira, acting on a tip-off, he found the two accused persons possessing and selling liquor in their grocery shops without licenses. They have been booked under Goa Excise Duty Act and Rules 1964 and a panchanama has been conducted of the confiscated goods.
Meanwhile, the Excise Inspector told Herald that he will conduct more such raids in the taluka and has warned the people not to indulge in such malpractices.
PWD’s pre-monsoon works in Ponda
PONDA: The PWD will undertake pre-monsoon works in the jurisdiction of Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) from Tuesday. The Ponda deputy collector’s office had written to the State Election Commission asking for permission to undertake pre-monsoon works, as the code of conduct is in place due to PMC election on May 12. “The State Election Commission has given exemption to carry out the pre-monsoon works and the works will be executed by the PWD,” informed Deputy Collector Johnson Fernandes.
