MARGAO: Power consumers from Cuncolim have cried foul over decision of the electricity department to shut down its office in the market and shifting the same to the sub-station near the industrial estate.
The electricity office, which was functioning from the telephone exchange building over the years was shut down from December 1 on grounds that the building is unsafe. What has made matters worse for the power consumers is that the office has been shifted to the sub-station located near the Cuncolim industrial estate.
When contacted, Electricity Assistant Engineer Sunil Wadekar said the department was helpless since the building from where the office was functioning was found unsafe. When questioned as to why the department did not make alternate arrangements in the market area before shifting the office to the sub-station, Wadekar said efforts are on to find a suitable office in the heart of the town.
Residents pointed out that shifting of the office to the sub-station will only make matters worse in the days to come unless immediate alternative arrangements are put in place.
Angry residents have conveyed their displeasure to the local MLA Rajan Naik over the closure of the office and have demanded alternate arrangements on a priority basis.
When contacted, the MLA said that he has mooted a proposal to shift the electricity department office to the Cuncolim Bus stand. “We hope to shift the electricity department office to the KTC bus stand within the next 10 days”, Rajan said.
