Cutbona boat owners agree to pay fee to fisheries dept

Margao: In a major decision, the Cutbona Boat Owners Development Corporation has agreed to pay the Rs 1 lakh to the fisheries department after being awarded the rights to collect parking fees at the jetty.

This decision is significant as the boat owners had earlier pointed out to various logistic related difficulties. There were many disagreements over the same which had delayed the matter.
The association President Savio D’silva said that after they won the rights for parking fee collection, logistics involved including putting of a gate and the appointment of staff for the collection of fees were turning out to be difficult to arrange.
He however stated that the association has agreed to pay the amount of Rs 1 lakh to the fisheries department as there was an agreement for the same and that the agent would contribute and collect the said amount.
It may be recalled that both the boat owner association and Velim panchayat had placed their proposals for the collection of parking fees to the fisheries department that was ultimately given to the boat owner association. Director of fisheries Dr Sharmila Monteiro wrote to the boat owner association seeking a revision of the parking fees to Rs 1 lakh from the Cutbona Jetty. Monteiro had pointed out that the finance (expenditure) department had disagreed to the Union’s proposal of Rs 1 lakh for two years given that this was part of the revenue the government would get in the form of parking fees. Cutbona jetty would be the second jetty in Goa to charge parking fees after Malim.
