MARGAO: Even as neighbouring Karwar fishing jetty registered a bumper catch of the solar shrimps on Sunday, mechanised boats here netted only a moderate catch of the prized shrimps on Sunday as a number of fishing vessels ventured out in the sea for the first time since the season kicked off on August 1.
Rough estimates have put the total catch of the solar shrimps on Sunday to only around 25-30 tons at the Vasco and Cutbona fishing jetties. While fishing boats returned with a ton of the prized shrimps at Karwar, many a trawling boats anchored at the Cutbona fishing jetty with around 200-300 kilograms of the shrimps. A kilogram of solar shrimps was pegged at a wholesale rate of Rs 150 at the Cutbona fishing jetty, though the boat owners were insisting on Rs 175 per kg.
President of Cutbona Boat Owners’ Union, Cypriano Cardozo told Herald at the fishing jetty on Sunday evening that only around 70-80 trawling boats ventured out in the sea following improvement in the weather conditions. “Each of the trawling vessels have returned back with a catch ranging between kilograms. We expect the purse seine vessels to venture out in the sea on Monday,” Cardozo said.
Replying to a question, he said the weather conditions in the sea have improved on Sunday, adding that boat owners hope for a conducive environment in the next few days.
Adverse weather conditions have come in the way of the mechanised boats from venturing out in the sea from the Cutbona jetty – the home for around 200 fishing boats. The hustle and bustle returned at the jetty with trawling boats anchoring with a moderate catch of the prized shrimps on Sunday evening.
