MARGAO, SEPT 7
Fatorda MLA Damu Naik on Tuesday inspected the Sonsodo garbage dump yard following complaints of foul odour and leachate flowing into the nearby water bodies.
Accompanied by MMC Chief Officer Y B Tawde and Councillors Ciriaca Rodrigues and Raju Shirodkar, the MLA called upon the Civic body to put in place necessary measures to control the leachate by channelising the water into a filter plant before its discharge into the water nullah.
“I have received complaints that leachate is flowing down the dumping site and entering the water nullah. This will leave the well waters contaminated, besides causing nuisance to the locals”, Naik complained.
Saying that if the leachate, if unchecked, will pose a health hazard to the local residents, Naik urged the MMC Chief Officer to instruct the contractor to initiate necessary measures to control the nuisance.
Fomento CEO Shridhar Kamat said the company will address the problem on a priority basis caused by rains in the last few days. He said there’s a slight problem at the entrance to the dumping site, adding that the company will try to channelise the rain water into the filter plant before its discharge.
