Pacheco’s first night in jail, after he surrendered on Monday before the JMFC Margao, turned out to be a sleepless one as after having consumed a vegetarian dinner consisting of rice, dal, roti and vegetables, prepared by inmates at around 9 pm, he was unable to sleep due to stress and hypertension. At around 4 am Pacheco began complaining of chest pain and breathlessness. Along with cell mates he lodged a report with the jail authorities in the morning after which jail officials requested the escort police to take Pacheco for medical assistance at Cottage hospital at Chicalim.
The escort police led by PSI Vaibhav Naik escorted Pacheco to the cottage hospital at Chicalim at around 10.30 am. Dr Sujata Kuvelkar attended to him and as Pacheco has been taking medication for his pressure, the doctor referred him to Goa Medical College and Hospital for a physician’s opinion.
As doctors at GMC did not found anything serious with Pacheco, after a routine medical checkup he was bought back to Sada sub jail at 2.30 pm after which he had a vegetarian lunch and slept till evening.
Sources claim that Pacheco prefers vegetarian food and is not demanding any special treatment. He, however, loves reading books and newspapers, which have been provided to him.
