Decision on regulating city market likely in 2 days

The Corporation of City of Panaji’s (CCP) market committee is likely to meet in next couple of days to thrash out the issues dogging regulation of city market.
The Corporation had recently come out with a notice asking market tenants to pay off their rents as per new market rates of Rs 195 per sq meter as against Rs 30 by July 15. The tenants were also asked to provide proper documents over the allotment of market space within the said deadline.
However, as there was strong objection from the Market Tenant Association over the hiked rate, of the total 458 shops and stalls and 446 vegetable and flower vendors, only 90 tenants managed to approach CCP with proper allotment papers and supporting new market rates.
“The market committee will be meeting in next two-three days to decide on the faith of market tenants, who failed to approach us,” CCP Mayor Caroline Po told Herald.
Po, who also heads the market committee, said that the meeting will decide whether to extend the deadline or to take action against all those who failed to provide documents.
Po in the past had said that the shops will be publicly auctioned, if the tenants failed to prove its ownership.
Talking to Herald earlier, CCP commissioner Elvis Gomes had cleared that the corporation will be evicting all those shopkeepers, who fail to provide proper documents of their allotment and occupation.
CCP started the massive exercise after they realized that corporation was loosing huge amount of revenue since 2003, as not a single pie was collected from the tenants.
Interestingly, one of the survey conducted by the civic body had proved that 295 sq meters of area is been illegal encroached by the vendors as against 1275 sq meters area allotted by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC). Interestingly, their names are also not included in the GSIDC list.
