PANJIM: Secretary (Defence Production) G Mohan Kumar called for enhancing indigenization, while emphasizing on research and development, when he recently made a maiden trip to the Goa Shipyard Ltd.
Kumar said the objective should be to achieve substantive self reliance while ensuring quality control, cost effectiveness and timely delivery of ships especially since the defence sector was witnessing a paradigm shift in recent times.
While on a two-day visit to the State, Kumar was shown around the shipyard, briefed on the progress of GSL’s current constructions of OPVs (Offshore Patrol Vessel) for the Indian Coast Guard and export markets as well as the recently acquired Mine Counter-Measures Vessel (MCMV) project.
GSL’s growth trajectory, in-house design capability, product profile and build strategy for the MCMV project were all explained to the Secretary (Defence Production). Kumar laid emphasis on the outsourcing and vendor development to enhance capabilities and improve productivity.
In addition to meeting with the various representatives of unions, Kumar also interacted with GSL officers and even inaugurated a family poly clinic at the shipyard.
