PONDA: Even after the 10th day of demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, panic and tension continued to prevail at markets as change for Rs 2,000 notes were not available due to the shortage of Rs 100 notes. The common exchange of words for exchange of change “Modd Di Modd Naa”`between two parties still continues in cities and villages.
People are fed up with the manner in which the transition is taking place. Queues at banks to deposit cash and withdraw the same have reduced slightly.
When this reporter visited a bank at Sadar, Ponda around 4pm, there were no queues. Asked how they were coping with the mammoth task given to them, bankers said they have been slogging tirelessly and there is not a fraction of a second to sit back and take a breath.
Some ATMs are still not operating while the ones dishing out cash witnessed queues.
People are still seen waiting in queues to exchange notes. By this one can estimate the amount of notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 that had flooded the market.
Some vendors in the market are still accepting the banned Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes on the pretext that one has to make a lion’s share in purchase.
