CALANGUTE: Six months after a new ultra-modern electricity sub-station was inaugurated with much fanfare at Arradi, Calangute, the popular tourism destination continues to face power breakdowns everyday, according to locals.
The new sub-station was expected to solve the problem, but it has not received the promised additional supply, according to Calangute MLA Michael Lobo.

The new sub-station was inaugurated by Power Minister Ramakrishna Dhavalikar in November last year. It was built following repeated protests by the NGOs and former Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes about the shortage of power.
Calangute Village Panchayat gram sabhas had also adopted resolutions not to allow any new large resorts till the power supply situation was improved.
When questioned by reporters recently, the Calangute MLA said: “The new sub-station has been inaugurated, but the incoming power which it was supposed to get has not been given. A 50 MVA transformer which was supposed to be connected at Colvale was delayed. It will happen soon.”
During the inauguration in November, Lobo had said the power deficiency would be solved with the setting up of the 33/11 KV gas-insulated sub-station (2×20 MVA). The cost of the project was Rs 25 crore.
