Dicarpale locals oppose garbage machine in p’yat compound

Police stationed to maintain order; But will of the people prevails

MARGAO: Davorlim Dicarpale witnessed some tense moments this morning as villagers vehemently opposed installing a wet garbage treatment machine in the panchayat premises and even the presence of a strong police force aided by the Malatdar did not faze the villagers who remained firm on their demand.
The panchayat had proposed to set up the wet garbage treatment machinery in the panchayat premises on a purely trial basis. However, the villagers objected to the site pointing out that it was close to a health centre and was in a totally residential area.
The villagers suggested that the plant be set up at some other place and in fact even suggested two other sites where the panchayat is already in possession of land.
Sarpanch Sahar Shaikh pointed out that the company has done them a favour by giving the plant that would be used only on a trial basis for which the panchayat will not pay the company any money.
“The plant costing around Rs 13 lakh will convert 300 kgs of wet waste into fertilizer per day and has a storage capacity of 2000 kgs,” said the Sarpanch who finally bowed down to the people’s demand and the plant was not installed.
The villagers said they are not opposed to having a wet garbage converting plant but objected to the site that was selected as it was a residential area and people living nearby would be affected.
