PANJIM: Former chief minister Digambar Kamat’s close aide Nitin Naik was grilled for several hours on Saturday in connection with documents seized from his residences and office on the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi, September 16.
Sources said Naik was asked whether the large amount of money – running into crores of rupees – was linked to Kamat. “Through investigations so far, there is strong suspicion that Kamat parked the money, which he got as a bribe from Louis Berger, at different places and with different people,” an officer said.
Crime Branch (CB) sleuths had raided Naik’s house, flat, office and cement godown in Margao based on credible information that Kamat had used Naik as a ‘conduit’.
“Naik is a front for Kamat. Huge benami transactions have taken place and crores of rupees were invested in his bank account. The investment is in some company/companies that do not exist. All these facts are being verified,” said an officer.

Sources also said that Naik could be probed as to whether he benefited from the bribery scam.
