PANJIM: The Congress on Thursday slammed the Narendra Modi-led government for putting the common man to hardship through it measures to curb black money by demonetisation which he claimed was done “without adequate precaution and preparation”.
“It is a decision to curb black money. Any decision to curb black money is welcome. But the black money is with the big people who don’t keep cash. They have got investments in properties, jewellery and abroad in tax havens. No big corporate house keeps cash,” Digvijay Singh, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary, said.
“This exercise that has been done to curb black money or to fight terrorism or to sort of see that counterfeit notes are not in circulation has been done without adequate precaution and preparation,” he claimed.
Singh said, “As far as I know, the cabinet never met to take this decision, it was a decision taken arbitrarily by the Prime Minister.”
The AICC leader said that a top banker from the public sector unit told him that 85 percent of the currency is made up of Rs 500 and 1,000 denomination notes.
“The exercise is not against the big people, it has put the daily wage earner into problems. Daily wage earners, particularly in metro cities or states like Goa, come from outside and earn around Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 a week and they get paid in Rs 500 notes,” he said.
