Walls of the police station have developed big cracks as well. On Tuesday, the roof of the male’s cell came crashing down and this incident has now spread fear amongst the police regarding the health of the rest of the structure. The Deputy Collector made an inspection and will decide on whether to conduct major repairs or to shift to a new shelter.
Quepem Police Station is a Portuguese house and the roof tiles and walls were painted recently. The main building of the police station is in decent shape but the barracks and cells are dilapidated. When it rains, the barracks and the cells fill up with water. Most of the police being from other towns prefer staying in the barracks over travelling back home. The women police barracks are also in bad shape. The police who come to rest in the barracks late at night have to adjust to the leaking roof tiles with a stick to stop the leak.
Sources claim that the roof tiles and the wooden columns of the police station haven’t been changed for years together. Successive Police Inspectors of Quepem have been conducting small repairs by spending from their own pockets.
Due to the damage to the male cell, higher officials have asked the PI to take the arrested and detained accused to the Curchorem police station cell.
