DM orders setting of 4 police check posts

In a bid to further streamline mining traffic in South Goa’s hinterland, the South Goa District Magistrate, G P Naik has directed setting of four additional police check posts to monitor and regulate trucks transporting mining ore.
The District Magistrate further issued direction to mining companies operating in the Sanguem-Quepem region to observe the High Court directions on mining operations in both letter and spirit.
This was conveyed by the Magistrate to representatives of mining companies at a meeting held at the District Collectorate, Margao on Saturday morning. Officials of various government agencies, including Traffic and Transport attended the meeting.
Naik told Herald after the deliberations that he has issued instructions to set up additional police check posts at Gudemol, near the Sanjivani factory, at Dharbandora and at Mollem.
“The work on erection of check posts would commence from tomorrow. The work is expected to be complete in all respects by Tuesday. The check posts would be operational by Tuesday evening or Wednesday”, Naik said.
According to him, fresh instructions have been issued to the mining companies to stop plying of mining trucks after 5.30 pm. As per new instructions, the transporters are required to load the trucks with mining ore till 5.30 pm. “This will be effectively monitored by the police personnel manning the check posts. Any violations by the transporters will be viewed seriously”, the District Magistrate added.
This is the second time the District Magistrate; South has issued directions to set up check posts to regulate mining traffic in the Sanguem-Quepem region. Earlier this month, the District Magistrate had erected five check posts including the two posts at Tilamol and Ambaulim and the authorities are regulating and reviewing the transport problems, although eyebrows have been raised over the success of the check posts.
