CBI wants to introduce plea bargain

The CBI today said it favours introduction of plea bargain, whereby a defendant is offered an opportunity to plead guilty usually to a lesser charge or to the original one with a recommendation of a lighter than the maximum sentence, to reduce the number of pending cases.
“We would like to introduce the system of plea bargaining so that we can expedite the process of justice and reduce the number of cases pending in the country,” CBI Director Ashwini Kumar told reporters here today.
Stating that at present there were 9,000 cases pending in the country including 740 in West Bengal, he said if the new system were introduced it would reduce the number of cases to a considerable degree. “This is where we want to prioritise.”
