PANJIM: Education Department has acquired 1.35 lakh sq mts of land at Davorlim to shift Margao-based schools to decongest the town.
Speaking to Herald, Education Director G P Bhat said, “DoE has already acquired the land and is currently in the process of demarcating the boundaries. Once the election code of conduct is over land will be allocated to the Margao schools.”
He added, “This move has been taken to decongest Margao town just as was done with the Cujira complex. Currently, I cannot comment on the number of schools which will be shifted there but DoE will invite fresh applications from the schools.”
He further said that the schools will have to invest on their own on building the infrastructure.
Commenting on the Cujira complex, Bhat said, “The Cujira complex is a success and we will try to bring similar complexes to Mapusa and Ponda, after Davorlim. Shortly another school will shift from the city to Cujira.”
Earlier, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar had stated that his government was committed to transferring all schools from Panjim to Cujira complex in a bid to ease traffic congestion and had also stated that similar educational hubs will be replicated in other towns with Margao being next on the list after Panjim.
