MARGAO: Velim MLA Benjamin D’Silva on Friday said the government should fulfill the long pending demand of the boat owners for dredging the mouth of River Sal.
Speaking to Herald on the sidelines of the function held at the Ravindra bhavan to distribute pension orders to retired seafarers, Benjamin welcomed the government decision to drop the land acquisition proceedings admeasuring 30,000 at the Cutbona fishing jetty. “People had opposed the land acquisition process because they suspected that was being done to set up a fish meal plan. I thank the government for dropping the land acquisition process”, he said.
The Velim MLA, however, said that other proposals including dredging of the mouth of River Sal and expansion of the Cutbona fishing jetty should be taken up by the government at the earliest.
“Boats face difficulty in venturing out in the sea and to return back to the jetty with the fish catch because of the hostile navigational channel at the river mouth. The government should take up the work after conducting the environment impact assessment,” he added.
