Electricity Department Removes Illegal Internet Cables from Poles in Margao After Safety Incident

The Electricity Department has launched a crackdown on illegal internet cables attached to power poles in the Margao area, following an order issued by the Collector and a court directive mandating the removal of all unauthorized cables from electricity infrastructure.

Officials said the action was prompted by a recent safety incident in which a Deputy Director suffered a fall after his leg became entangled in one of the loose cables. The department described the situation as highly dangerous, stressing that such incidents pose a serious risk to both staff and the public.

“We have initiated action because these cables are installed without permission and create hazardous conditions. Moreover, the electricity department receives no revenue from internet providers who use our poles,” said Executive Engineer Kashinath Shetye. He added that the department will also be filing a police complaint with Margao Police in connection with the matter.

The drive to clear unauthorized cables is expected to continue across the city to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
