EMRI staff threaten hunger strike

PANJIM: Striking employees of the 108 emergency services have threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike, as the GVK EMRI management is apparently not in favour of acceding to their demands, even as the government has agreed to them.

Speaking to media, Hridaynath Shirodkar, in-charge of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, Goa unit said, “The government has told the management to reinstate the employees who were dismissed from service and register themselves as a contractor.  But GVK have refused to do so.”
Shirodkar said the State government considered the demands of the 108 Ambulance Service Employees Union and have asked the management to pay a fee as a contractor. He, however, claimed that the management has refused to do so.
The employees who have been on strike since February 17, have said that while the government is on their side, “it is GVK which is not ready to register itself as a contractor. On the other hand, some members of the union have also been receiving threatening calls, demanding that we get back to work,” Sagar Prabhudesai, union member said.
The union is demanding for regularization, better working conditions and road worthy vehicles in addition to a long list of other demands.
