BELGAUM: Denouncing the Goa government’s decision to levy entry tax on vehicles from Belgaum, Karwar and other neighbouring areas as unfortunate, Belgaum MP Suresh Angadi and Belgaum’s Rajya Sabha MP Dr Prabhakar Kore, said they would raise the issue at the BJP party national level meet.
Dr Kore, who along with Angadi is a member of the BJP national executive, said it was “unfortunate that government of Goa is imposing this decision on people of Belgaum who will bear the maximum brunt.”
“Apart from persuading Goa’s Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, I will take up the matter with the national executive of the party,” said Dr Kore, who is also an influential figure as chairman of the prominent KLS Society.
Angadi told Herald that levying of an entry tax on vehicles from Belgaum and other neighbouring areas would have “an adverse impact on the age-old cordial relationship.”
“Apart from having an interaction with Parrikar, I will also send an appeal to him to withhold the decision of levying entry tax. If needed, BJP workers will join hands with the agitating transporters and various organizations who have opposed the proposed entry tax,” Angadi told Herald.
Meanwhile, tempo and taxi operators from Belgaum have also opposed the proposed entry tax, claiming that the tax, apart from having direct impact on vegetable and other commodities supplied to Goa, is also likely to affect tourism.
