MARGAO: The Archdiocese of Goa and Daman is set to host the 18th Exposition of the Sacred Relics of St Francis Xavier from November 21, 2024, to January 5, 2025, at Old Goa. This significant event, held every decade, attracts thousands of pilgrims from across the globe, drawn by their deep reverence for the Spanish saint known locally as “Goencho Saib.” The exposition will open with a Eucharistic celebration at 9.30 am on November 21 at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, followed by a solemn procession transporting the sacred relics to the Se Cathedral. In a departure from past traditions, the relics will be carried in a specially adorned carriage instead of being borne on the shoulders of devotees.

Fr Henry Falcão, Convenor of the Exposition Committee, anticipates a significantly larger turnout than in 2014 due to widespread media coverage, social media influence, and improved travel facilities. Pilgrims are encouraged to prepare for moments of prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal during the 45-day event. Veneration of the sacred relics will be held daily from November 22 to January 4, between 7 am and 6 pm, while the final day, January 5, will feature a closing Mass and procession without veneration.
Masses will be conducted eight times daily, starting at 6 am and concluding with the last service at 6.15 pm. Special slots at 12.15 pm and 2 pm are available for pilgrims travelling from outside Goa, who can book these through the Basilica Rector. The feast day of St. Francis Xavier, December 3, will be marked by a special Mass celebrated by His Eminence Luis Antonio Gokim Cardinal Tagle from Rome. The inaugural Mass on November 21 will be presided over by Archbishop of Delhi, Anil Joseph Thomas Couto, while Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão, the Archbishop of Goa and Daman, will lead the closing Mass on January 5.
