MARGAO: Former Canacona municipal engineer Ajay Desai, who was wanted by the Crime branch in the Canacona building collapse case, surrendered before the Special Court, Margao on Friday.
Special Judge, Nutan Sardesai has remanded the accused to eight days police custody for the purpose of investigations.
The surrender comes after his anticipatory bail application found no favour with the Special court as well as the high court. Ajay was found seated in the open court room and later appeared in the accused box after his lawyer, Adv Anacleto Viegas drew attention of the Special Judge that his client has surrendered before the court. At this point, the SPP moved an application before the Judge seeking remand of the accused, wherein the Judge remanded Ajay to eight days police custody.
Meanwhile, the Special Court on Friday heard the bail application moved by former DTP, Prakash Bandodkar. His lawyer, Adv Amay Prabhudessai told the court that the investigating agency has not brought on record to show that Bandodkar had accepted illegal gratification.
SPP Sardinha, however, countered that the deputy town planner had granted the completion certificate of the building when plastering was still underway. She said no structural stability certificate was found in the record, which is mandatory before issuing the completion certificate. Judge Sardesai has fixed for order on the bail application to February 26.
