PANJIM: Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC), comprising A D Salkar and J A Keny, has directed the government, municipal councils and panchayats to expedite the process of developing burial grounds and crematoriums and to submit a report by July 21.
The GHRC directions came after Adv Aires Rodrigues, appearing for Sanguem-based complainant Dr Anthony Rodrigues, drew the Commission’s attention that the authorities were dragging their feet in the matter.
The complainant, who was earlier represented by late Advocate Satish Sonak, in his complaint filed in May 2014 submitted that every citizen has a right to a decent burial or cremation. The complainant has sought that every taluka have a crematorium and burial ground owned by the government so that people of all sects of religions have a right to a respectable burial or cremation.
