The Goa police suspect that the alleged extra-marital affair of suspect Govind Gir’s wife with Shantaram Laxman Gaonkar, led to the latter’s murder on Monday.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Deu Benaulikar revealed that Gir’s wife also had an alleged affair with another man.
A native of Caselrock at Karnataka, Gaonkar was found in a pool of blood in his room at Mala on Monday morning.
The rear side of his head was smashed and face partly bruised.
Sawmill owner Parag Karmali, who first saw the body, in a statement to Panjim town police revealed on the alleged affair.
“The deceased resided in the room adjacent to Gir in the same house. Not just Gaonkar but witness Lal Singh Oli also allegedly had affairs with Gir’s wife. There were tiffs earlier, which were sought out by Karmali once,” said the officer.
Gir, a native of Nepal is absconding since Monday and it is reportedly learnt that he had already fled from Goa.
The lone eye-witness of the quarrel, Oli informed police that Gir in an inebriated condition triggered a quarrel and assaulted Gaonkar at about 9 pm on Sunday.
When he intervened Gir threatened of consequences. The witness thereafter escaped to his room in the same house, which comprises of seven rooms shared by others.
The victim and the alleged accused were employed with Karmali, as cashier-cum-clerk and labourer, respectively.
The absconder, besides, doubled up as a watchman with a security agency at St Inez ATM centre in the night.
