FDA asked to crack down on artificial ripening of bananas

PANJIM: Minister for Health Vishwajit Rane on Thursday directed the department of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) to crack down on godowns and yards to check artificial ripening of bananas in the state.

In a series of tweets, Rane informed he had a meeting with FDA officials where he instructed them to form different teams and crack down on the elements involved in artificial ripening of bananas.

“Artificial ripening of Bananas with Ethephon and Calcium carbide powder is hazardous and causes cancer,” he tweeted. 

Rane said that since cancer is on rise in the State, government will take all the steps and precautions to prevent it. 

“We shall be conducting strict raids and thorough investigation thereafter, to provide quality food to our citizens,” minister tweeted further. 

He said that the crack teams of FDA will raid each and every godown and yard in the cities like Mapusa, Margao, Panjim and Ponda where the bananas are stored.
