Fear of floods in Cuncolim Market

Rampant unplanned construction and a delay in cleaning the drains could result in the experiences of the recent past of water entering shops

Will this monsoon brings floods in Cuncolim Market? Will the under construction Commercial building project of GSUDA create floods like situation in Cuncolim? Will the drainages full of mud create floods in Cuncolim? Are some questions haunting Cuncolkars . Cuncolkars and especially Shopkeepers and Vendors are praying to god not to create havoc in Cuncolim Market in this Monsoon.
Cincinnati Civic body has done the makeup work of pre monsoon . Highway authorities and PWD department has never cleaned the drainages on the  Highway. They have  not even bothered to repair and clean those Drainages on the NH17. These drains are not in position to drain out the water. Some of the local Hotel owners and other Shopkeepers are releasing their waste water in these drains due to which drains got chocked up. Local Municipal Council authorities are not ready to clean it, saying Highway drains cleaning is not come under their jurisdiction.
Since major Highways drains have not cleaned there is high risk of floods in Cuncolim Market. Fight between PWD and Cuncolim Municipal Council has kept road drains in shabby position.
It is the duty of Cuncolim Municipal council to carry out Pre Monsoon work. Unfortunately CMC failed to give justice to pre monsoon work. CMC had done only makeup work on the name of pre monsoon work. Government is constructing a multi facility huge building at Cuncolim market. This building is standing in a low lying area which was the main centre to drain out rain water. Due to building project the traditional drainage at the construction site got blocked. If every thing doesn’t go well it is sure that Cuncolim market will be under water. During the start of the building project it was promised to keep a broad drain to drain out the rain water. This of course was not kept.  In this year it looks like Cuncolim will be under water .Cuncolkars are now praying the Commercial building project of GSUDA will not cause a problem.
Cuncolkars and shopkeepers claim their opinion was not ascertained by authorities before starting the construction work. Narrow drains will certainly created floods in Cuncolim Market.
Some years back there were heavy floods experienced by Cuncolkars. The entire market was under water. Shopkeepers are predicting a repetition of this at the Cuncolim Market.
Local Civic authority tried their level best by cleaning CMC Drainages. Major problem is the traditional drain of rain water got blocked at different places which can cause problem. Local shopkeepers have made their arrangements to prevent rain water entering their shops. When asked local Civic Authorities claimed they had done pre-monsoon work.  Shopkeepers and vendors have keeping their fingers crossed.
From last year shopkeepers have been demanding a provision to drain out rain water. In fact it was the duty of the contractor to clean the drain which is blocked by them putting mud and debris. CMC had not instructed or ordered the concerned contractor to clear the drain. Some years back due to negligence of one Bridge contractor Sanvorcoto ward was flooded. It looks like CMC had not learnt its lessons from past experiences. Cuncolkars and in particular shopkeepers are hoping they are proved wrong this year.
