MARGAO: Finally taking cognisance of the O Heraldo report, the officials from the Info Tech Corporation of Goa Limited and others concerned, on Tuesday visited the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) library and decided to modernise the library in collaboration with the civic body to preserve the literary treasure and enhance access for future generations.

The initiative includes the digitisation of a valuable collection of centuries-old rare books, which could further deteriorate if not taken proper care. The move aims to preserve this literary treasure and enhance access for future generations.
The Info Tech Corporation and MMC officials discussed a master plan for the renovation and restoration of the municipal library’s valuable collection. It was decided to utilise funds to the tune of Rs 25 lakh under a central scheme to enhance and preserve the library’s resources.
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, along with MMC chairperson Damodar Shirodkar, Info Tech Corporation of Goa Ltd MD Praveen Volvotkar and the library representatives, were present at the library.
It is pertinent to note that a few days ago; O Heraldo had published an exclusive report highlighting the issues related to the preservation and maintenance of the municipal library. The report had highlighted the deteriorating condition of rare books, which were echoed by experts and book lovers alike.
In response to the report, authorities concerned have begun deliberating on the issue and have initiated measures to preserve and protect the library’s valuable collection. After the visit, MLA Digambar Kamat informed O Heraldo that the digitisation of all rare books will be completed in the near future, ensuring better access and protection for this important literature.
Kamat said, “A master plan presented by ITC was discussed, and we instructed them to initiate the process without any delay. There is a Central government scheme for the preservation of books and renovation of libraries, and we will be utilising this scheme for the MMC library’s renovation.”
He also mentioned that the century-old MMC library will be modernised under the Central scheme.
Previously, in 2021, a team of experts from Goa University, led by Dr Carlos Fernandes, had visited the library and had recommended several measures, including the installation of portable dehumidifiers, to help protect the rare book collection.
