Reacting to the FIR, Gomes said, “I welcome the registration of the FIR against me. I have nothing to hide. I reiterate that I am an Indian national. I am confident the Goa Police will conduct a detailed investigation into the complaint against me and Aires Rodrigues, and eventually the truth will surface.”
In his complaint to the police, Santana Piedade Afonso claimed that information obtained from the Conservatoria dos Registos Centrais Lisboa had made it amply clear that Gomes was a Portuguese national and not an Indian citizen.
Afonso has further alleged that Gomes had received monetary benefits from the Goa government to represent the State in cases, which amounts to a gross violation of the law. He has also claimed that Gomes made false allegations against elected representatives, including MLAs and former and present Margao councillors.
Gomes, who has been a special public prosecutor in the JICA bribery case in 2015, has now been booked under the Citizenship Act, 1955, Sections 177, 181, 419 and 420 of IPC, the Representation of People’s Act and Section 14 of the Foreigners Act.
