“It took us nearly two hours to extinguish the fire with the help of three fire tenders. Some persons had set fir to dry grass, which spread to the storeroom owned by Dilip Manjrekar. Wooden material, tiles, etc, which were kept in the storeroom, were destroyed in the fire. We could save property worth about Rs 3 lakh,” informed Ferrao. Former fire station officer D D Redkar retired on November 30 and Ferrao, who was working at the headquarters in Panjim, has now taken charge of the Mapusa fire station, while Sripad Gawas has taken charge as the Panjim fire station officer.

Dr Naik has been active in the field of echocardiography for many years. He has been involved in many workshops in echocardiography for the last few years. Mass for workers in city today

Mass for Sri Lanka pilgrims at Sancoale
PANJIM: Mass for Sri Lankan pilgrims will be celebrated on December 7, at 9 am at the Shrine of Bl Joseph Vaz, Sancoale. Sri Lankan pilgrims will visit the holy places of Bl Joseph Vaz in Goa from December 6 to 9. Bl Vaz, saved the Catholic faith on the island of Sri Lanka. They will also pray at the Church of Sao Pedro which houses the statue of Our Lady of Jaffna which was brought to Goa from Sri Lanka during the Dutch persecution of Catholics in Sri Lanka. This statue is known in Goa as the statue of Our Lady of Miracles. Meanwhile, the Sancaole sanctuary has organized a mass on December 14, at 9 am for Goan pilgrims visiting Sri Lanka for the canonization ceremony. The pilgrims will be briefed on the holy places in Sri Lankan.
SHG mela from Dec 6
PANJIM: The Goa State Urban Development Agency will be holding a State-level self help group mela from December 6 to 8, at Lohia Maidan, Margao under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission Programme. The function will be inaugurated at 10.30 am by Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza. Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardesai are expected to be present. GSUDA will also organize drawing and fancy dress competition as part of the mela. There will also be a snake show by Amrut Singh on December 6, at 6.15 pm and an astronomical show by Friends of Astronomy, Panjim on December 8, at 6 pm. On December 7, orchestra by Sachin will perform at 4 pm. Around 50 stalls will be allotted to self help group.
Vipassana meditation course
PANJIM: Goa Vipassana Samiti is organizing the 1-day Vipassana meditation course on December 7, from 10 am to 4 pm, at Queen Laura, opposite Patrao Plaza, next to Axle Height, road to Penha-de-Franca, Alto Porvorim. It is only for old students who have already learnt the technique. It is held every first Sunday of the month at the same venue.
Bank employees strike today
PANJIM: Public sector bank employees in Goa will go on a day-long relay strike on Friday demanding immediate settlement of wage revision. About 250 branches of all nationalised banks having 4,800 staff and officers are expected to participate in the strike. The bank employees will hold a rally at 9.30 am that will start from the Azad Maidan. It will wend its way through M G Road, Hotel Mandovi, D B Bandodkar Marg, Land Survey department, Govt Printing Press and end at Azad Maidan with a meeting. A relay strike called by United Forum of Bank Unions is currently underway in the country and it will end on December 5.
Consumers urged to comply with DBTS
MARGAO: With the modified Direct Benefit Transfer LPG scheme coming into force from November 15, the authorities have urged all the consumers to comply with the formalities within the grace period of three months to avail benefits under the scheme. South Goa district Collector Venancio Furtado on Thursday said that customers who have not yet submitted their Aadhar Card to the LPG distributors need to submit the bank account to the LGP distributor in Form III or they need to submit the LPG identity to the bank in Form No IV. “Under this scheme, those who have furnished Aadhar card and Bank Account will directly benefit.
