MARGAO: It has been witnessed that despite the closure of the wholesale fish market at Madel, agents are busy selling fish outside the market on a very large scale and that too violating all the norms of COVID-19. Surprisingly there is no action from the concerned authorities.
On daily basis, 40-50 trucks can be seen outside the South Goa Planning and Development Authority’s (SGPDA) wholesale fish market. Citizens, besides “Sopo” collector Milagres Fernandes have appealed to the District Collector to take strict action against the agents.

It must be noted that the SGPDA had issued a closure order of the wholesale fish market for not following the protocol of COVID norms.
But, the closure order of the wholesale fish market has gone for a toss, as the agents continued to sell fish outside the market compound. As many as 40-50 trucks from outside the State are seen parked on the under constructed western bypass road, which is just a kilometre away from the market.
In the early morning hours at 4, wholesale of fish begins and it continues till the 8 to 9 am. The police do make their presence felt but only after the business hours get over.
Speaking to the media persons, Milagres demanded to take action against the fish agents immediately.
“It is almost nine days now the market is closed but despite this, the agents are seen selling the fish near the market. It was noticed that massive rush at the market in the early morning hours and the SGPDA had rightly decided to close the market. Now, it is proven that these agents have no concern about the people of Goa,” he stated.
He further requested the concerned authorities especially the police and Margao Municipal (MMC) authorities to take strict action against the violators.
Meanwhile, taking serious note of the above activity, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes on Thursday issued an order of strict action.
