PANJIM: Over 800 mechanized boats in the state will not venture into the sea from Monday as the annual 61-day-long fishing ban along the western coastal areas comes into force. The uniform fishing ban will be implemented in Goa and its two neighbouring states – Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The ban period earlier lasted for 45 days, but it has now been increased to two months in a bid to conserve fish stock at sea during its breeding period.
“This is an annual procedure as per the rules laid down by the ministry. The ban will avoid disturbances caused by trawlers and allow hundreds of fish to breed,” a fisheries official told Herald.
The ban, extending to 12 nautical miles off sea, is certainly to shoot up the seafood price.
