Around five out of the total 39 scrap yards were sealed on Monday on the instructions of the Margao Deputy Collector Ajit Panchwadkar. The action has come following directions issued by the Goa State Pollution Control Board to seal the illegal scrap yards since they were operating without consent to operate.
Sao Jose de Areal Sarpanch Julio Monteiro expressed satisfaction that the authorities have finally started the process to seal the scrap yards and hoped that the exercise will be completed at the earliest.
Velim MLA Benjamin D’Silva said that he had been pursuing with the authorities from day one since his election to stop the illegal scrap yards operating from Areal village. “I had taken up the matter, right from the Chief Minister to the District Collector and the Pollution Control Board. I have been told that the authorities have started the exercise”, he said, even as he exuded confidence that the authorities would move in to seal all the 39 scrap yards dotting Areal’s countryside.
