CANACONA: Five Olive Ridley turtles nested on the two beaches in Canacona and laid over 500 eggs this month.
“Two Olive Ridley turtles nested on Agonda and one on Galgibaga beach in the intervening night of Thursday and Friday taking the total nesting to five during the current season in Canacona,” a wildlife official said.
Wildlife officials added that two Olive Ridley turtles arrived on Agonda beach on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday and layed 108 and 101 eggs, respectively.
Another Olive Ridley also arrived on Galgibaga beach in the wee hours of Friday and left the beach after laying 116 eggs, the first one had nested on New Year eve.
Wildlife officials in Canacona said that till now they have recorded nesting of five Olive Ridley nesting in the current season on the twin beaches of Agonda and Galgibaga which are reserved for turtle nesting.
“Till now we have shifted 450 eggs of Olive Ridley turtles to safe enclosures for incubation for the current season while the fifth turtle which nested close to an incubation centre on Agonda beach is cordoned off and we expect the nest to have about 100 eggs,” the official added.
