MARGAO: Five villages have come together to oppose Waste Treatment Plant at Loutolim-Verna plateau. They have instead proposed a decentralised management system as per industry standards.
Sarpanchs, Panchas and BMC members of Loutolim, Verna, Quelossim, Nagoa, Nuvem and local MLA Wilfred D’Sa met and discussed the waste management plant proposed at Loutolim-Verna plateau.
The proposed plant was compared with the alternative solution of decentralised waste management for benefits, costs, impacts and compliance with the law and best international standards.
It was mentioned at the meeting that the panchayats are managing and treating their garbage to the best of their abilities and are in the process of creating infrastructure for 100% segregation and composting at source, involvement of traditional recyclers and landfills of minimum size for each village.
The meeting highlighted that the 32 springs and 48 water bodies fed by the ecologically sensitive Loutolim-Verna plateau, which sustain the lives and livelihoods of the villagers, will be destroyed if the plant is constructed.
The elected representatives have come to a unanimous decision that the proposed waste management plant is against public interest.
Later, the sarpanchs of Loutolim and Raia told reporters that the Nuvem MLA promised full support to the elected representatives and to get an appointment with the chief minister and the authorities concerned at the earliest.
