MARGAO: The flying squad rushed to Paroda village to stop filling of low lying land just metres away from the Kushawati River.
The action follows a complaint from the President of Goenchea Xetkarancho Ekvott, Dilip Hegde that land filling was taking place on a vast area in violation of the rules. A TCP official said that he would lodge a complaint with the police to initiate necessary action against the land owner.
Hegde told newspersons at the site that the low lying area is a flood-prone area and highly eco-sensitive in nature as per the Collector’s report. He pointed out that the land filing activity was spotted on April 2, but despite the complaint lodged with the police, the activity continued.
“The land filling area falls just 50 meters away from the Kushawati River. During monsoons, the land was acting as a catchment area. But, it is now being sought to be converted to display marbles. We suspect that the land is being filled up to house the marble store”, he alleged.
Replying to a question, Hegde lamented that though a complaint was lodged with the police, the men-in-uniform did not support him, but instead protected the opponent to carry on with the activity.
