MARGAO: In a major development, work on the landfill site at the Sonsodo waste dumping site has come to a complete halt, even as Fomento Green blamed Margao Municipal Chief Officer Deepali Naik for her “uncooperative attitude” resulting in the prevailing situation at the site.
Fomento Green CEO Sridhar Kamat told the media that work on the land filling site will resume at the site only if the authorities take strong cognisance of the situation and support the lawful activities carried out by the company. “The MMC Chief Officer is totally not cooperative with the project at Sonsodo. I find no cooperation from the Chief Officer. I appeal to Madgavkars to see what is happening. Unless and until the Chief officer of Margao Municipality cooperates, the project will go haywire,” Kamat told the media.
He said Fomento Green has obtained all permissions not only to set up the land fill site, but to cut the hill from the Town and Country Planning department. “Work on the hill cutting for the land fill site stands stopped since the last three days. People have stopped the trucks transporting mud for the Nuvem bypass, but the authorities have not supported us till date to carry out the work. We have spent money as part of Corporate Social Responsibility. The people and the authorities should help us to make the plant a success,” he added. Incidentally, Kamat said that the Margao City Fathers had been supportive of the work at Sonsodo, adding that district Collector had also extended his cooperation to the company.
He said that mud excavated for the land fill site goes to the Nuvem bypass as per the decision of the High Powered Committee headed by the Chief Minister. “When we excavate the mud, it has to go somewhere. We are doing the work lawfully. The authorities should have supported us when we were doing the activity with permissions,” he added.
Replying to a question, Kamat said he can go ahead with the land fill site only when the MMC Chief Officer writes to the district Collector to give police protection to the activity.
