PANJIM: As the contract for beach cleaning commenced on Monday, the two agencies have started the process of recruiting manpower and putting logistics in place.
Bhumika Transport and Ram Engineering and Construction Company, which have been awarded the tender in the north and south Goa districts respectively, have begun initial work of placing dustbins on the beaches, building composting pits, recruiting manpower, purchasing vehicles and other requirements.
“We have contracted the two agencies to cater to the cleanliness of our beaches. The contract begins on September 2, where the initial work is underway. This cleanliness drive is slated to be in full swing in 30 days with all requirements in place,” Tourism Deputy Director Pamela Mascarenhas said.
According to the tender, the waste from the bins will be collected on a daily basis in addition to combing of wet and dry sand. Special arrangements will also be made to meet the intense waste on beaches after events such as Ganesh idol immersion, Durga celebrations, beach weddings, film shootings or any other tourism related events.
“This will ensure complete cleanliness of the beach within 24 hours after the day of the event. Floating and other wastes onto the beaches from tidal springs especially during the monsoons and high tides amongst others will also be cleaned,” she said.
This will be an integrated system comprising cleaning of beaches through manual means wherever necessary, giving utmost priority to environment protection and pollution control of sand and water.
