Garbage dominates Davorlim sabha

Garbage collection and disposal dominated the gram sabha proceedings of the Davorlim-Dicarpale Panchayat, on Sunday.
While gram sabha members demanded to know from the Chair the efforts made by the Panchayat to solve the garbage menace, Sarpanch Francisco Colaco said that the Panchayat had been trying to find a suitable site for garbage disposal, but in vain.
He said the Panchayat is still in the process of identifying the land to treat garbage and other waste generated in the village.
The issue over the government’s move to acquire land admeasuring 1.15 lakh sq meters to set up the multi-purpose utility project also came up for discussion. Some of the members demanded to know why the government is acquiring the land when the locals are in dire need of the land for housing as well as for other purposes.
A gram sabha member Antonnetta demanded to know how the government can acquire the land of the original inhabitants when the same was protected by the ancestors for posterity.
She maintained that most of the garbage generated in the village is from the new buildings coming up in the village, adding that the original inhabitants take care of their garbage woes.
She lamented that local MLA Churchill Alemao has not bothered to hear the grievances of the people on a host of issue.
Meanwhile, Anand Sawant drew attention of the gram sabha to the truck parking at the Power House junction and the inaction of the police and other authorities to the dangers. Sawant suggested holding a protest at the junction on December 5 since the authorities have been dilly dallying on the issue.
