VASCO: Confirming that the two barges dispatched to Indonesia on Wednesday belonged to one of its members, the Goa Barge Owners Association (GBOA) has stated that efforts have been made to move six barges to Kuwait, given a lull in mining activities in the State.
Speaking to Herald, Goa Barge Owners Association President Atul Jadav admitted that two barges belonged to one of their members, Jubilee Shipping Pvt Ltd.
“The Jubilee Shipping has three barges and while one barge was towed to Indonesia, the two other barges will be shipped to Indonesia on Wednesday from Mormugao Port and they will be utilised to transport coal in Indonesia,” GBOA President Atul Jadav said.
Asked if other GBOA members would also follow suit, Jadav said the association had applied to D G Shipping in January to allow six barges to go to Kuwait.
“The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), in turn, directed the Indian Registrar of Shipping (IRS) to conduct a survey of the barges and the weather and four months to let us know that barges could not go to Kuwait,” informed Jadav.
“With the help of South Goa MP Francis Sardinha, we met the Minister of Shipping and informed him about the delay by the DGS. On the minister’s intervention the problem was solved and DGS has assured to allow barges to be moved to other countries,” added Jadav.
