Margao: After watching the e-briefing made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Goa Forward Party (GFP) President Vijai Sardesai said he agreed on Gandhi’s take on various issues surrounding the lockdown and pandemic.
He further added that he agrees with the statement that ‘lockdown’ provides just a break and does not end the virus.
“In Goa, Goa Forward Party has been repeating ad nauseam that ‘lockdowns’ don’t stop a pandemic, they only delay it. It is important that everyone in India gets this crucial message through the INC that pandemics end only through either injection (this option is out of question at present as it is not yet ready) or infection (when 60-70% of the population gets infected) to achieve ‘herd immunity’. But the delay affected by ‘lockdowns/social distancing measures’ is important a) to put the critical health infrastructure in place and b) to ramp up testing so as to save lives of the vulnerable sections of the population with low immunity and co-morbidities especially those above 60 and below 10 years of age” said Vijai.
“Moreover, as per experts, nearly 80% of those infected don’t require hospitalization. Any responsible government needs to use the ‘break’ to focus on preparing the critical health infrastructure for the remaining 20% (which in India can be a huge number) and especially the 5-10% that may require ICU support so as to minimize the loss of life” Vijai added.
Vijai added that he is also in total agreement that the ‘un-lockdown’ needs to be ‘strategic’ to avoid what experts say is a ‘second and a third wave’.
