PANJIM: The Goa Green Brigade (GGB) has filed a complaint with the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) against alleged illegal felling of trees at Assagao.
In a complaint to PCCF, GGB Coordinator Avertino Miranda has pointed out blatant destruction of private forests in and around the Survey Nos 128/9 and 128/10 and the neighbouring areas of Assagao.
He alleged that the dense forests are being cut systematically by felling a few trees every day especially on weekends and holidays.
“These are thick forests as can be seen from Google Earth images. Also, the North Goa Forest Division Committee has identified these areas as forests as per the official list prepared by them,” he said.
Miranda said the ongoing forest trees’ felling is completely illegal and is destroying the environment and the rich biodiversity of the Assagao irreversibly.
He said that following complaint to Forest Dept in September, the officials inspected the roadside area, but failed to inspect the thick forests where the tree felling is taking place.
The Goa Green Brigade has demanded that the tree felling be stopped immediately ensuing that the land use is not changed.
