PANJIM: Responding to Herald’s report on the condition of the Goa Medical College morgue, at Bambolim, Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said the new 200 cabin morgue would be commissioned within the next 45 days.
Parsekar said, “The old morgue with 60 cabins and equipment is functioning well. Only its external façade in bad condition.”
Parsekar said that since plans are on to commission the new morgue soon, it was decided not to incur expenditure on re-doing the external façade of the old morgue as the audit could raise objections.
He further said the new state-of the-art Rs 30 crore morgue will also have an operating theatre, classrooms, museum, and office.
The old morgue will be demolished to construct an auditorium and an examination hall.
The health minister was replying to a Zero Hour notice raised by Sankhali legislator Dr Pramod Sawant who urged the government to ensure that the deceased are given a decent place while expressing concern over the present condition of the old GMC morgue as reported in Herald.
DOCS EMPANELLED TO CERTIFY PILGRIMS: Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar Tuesday told the House that it has appointed six doctors to issue medical certificates to those wishing to undertake the pilgrimage to Amarnath.
Independent Fatorda legislator Vijai Sardesai drew the attention of the house that Goa is the only state out of 26 which has not empanelled doctors to certify pilgrims wishing to undertake the yatra.
Parsekar admitted that there was a delay and has now empanelled six doctors two each at GMC, Hospicio and Asilo.
